2015 Heitz 61 Hockey Camp

August 3-5, 2015

Our Foundation was awarded two grants that made this camp possible.  Many thanks to J. Samuel & Rose Y. Cox Foundation through PNC Charitable Trust and The UPS Foundation.  This was a free three-day camp that was offered to three amazing organizations:  Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins Sled Hockey, Steel City Icebergs and Pittsburgh I.C.E.  Click on the links below to learn more about these organizations that are supported by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation.

Thanks to all who made this camp possible!

CAMP DAY ONE - We were honored to have Sean Berkstresser and Matt Bartkowski coordinate the on-ice training for each team.  Afterwards, Dan McCoy shared the inspirational story of his road to winning the 2014 Paralympic Gold Medal in Socchi.  The participants also had the opportunity to work with Derek Schooley, RMU Head Hockey Coach, in an organized off-ice sporting event.  There were lots of smiles and laughter on the sports court, especially when the Pittsburgh Penguins Iceberg made an appearance.

CAMP DAY TWO - We were honored to have Brandon Rubeo and Matt Schwartz lead the on-ice training.  Afterwards, the participants had a lesson on nutrition and sugars, followed by an incredible and upbeat hip-hop workout led by Dana Grau, Linda Maus, Kam Niskach & Sabrina de Matteo.  The energy coming off the sports court was incredible!

CAMP DAY THREE - The Icebergs and Pittsburgh ICE got a sled hockey lesson from Dan and Mark McCoy.  It was great for them to experience how to play the sport they love in a sled.  Another off-ice sporting event was coordinated by Brandon, with the help of several friends.  Robert Morris University’s mascot, ROMO, made an appearance and brought smiles to all who crossed his path.  Who knew that ROMO could skate??

All of this was made possible by grants received from PNC Charitable Trust and The UPS Foundation.  We also had many volunteers on and off the ice.  Since we cannot list everybody’s name we want to say THANK YOU for making this possible and helping us do great things through the Foundation we created in memory of Ryan.
